With our fast-paced society, we tend to lose interest quickly with “new” things or “new fads.” I see that in myself and even my kids. We get excited and are in awe when new gadgets or toys come out, but after a few months that “awe” goes away and we move on to the next ‘fad.’
That loss of AWE can creep into our lives with God and that is when red flags and danger signs can rise up. Whenever we lose our AWE of God, then we are in trouble in every area of our life because He is the One who created us.
Psalm 110 is a great Psalm that we need to read to reignite or even begin our AWE of God. It is a Psalm that shows God as our victorious God. He is a sure foundation that never changes. He restores us and renews us. He is always in control.
God created us with a built in “AWE” for Him that flows to every area of our life. And when we lose that AWE, it affects our whole life. It affects our marriage, our parenting, our work, and even our spiritual life.
But what are some warning signs of losing that AWE of God? How do we make sure we don’t lose it?
The first warning sign is when our emotions begin to get out of control and control us. Our emotions are the window into what reveals our AWE in life. What makes us happy? What do I love? Where is my time being spent? Who or what controls your life? The answer will reveal where your AWE is.
The next sign is when we have gratitude amnesia. We are grateful for the created things instead of the Creator. We worship our possessions instead of the One who gave us those possessions. We are consumed with our own abilities instead of being consumed with the One who gave us those abilities.
Finally, our vertical focus turns into a horizontal addiction. We begin to be focused on things around us instead of focusing upward to God. Then we become overwhelmed with the things of this world instead of being overwhelmed with God.
As you go about your day, do not miss out on seeing God all around you. Pay attention to the little things. Don’t get in a hurry! Don’t miss out on our AWESOME God.
